Leah Makaila Smith - The Birth Day

Chad and I arrived at Deaconess Medical Center at 7am on Saturday, December 26th. We were checked into our room and at 7:30 our nurse (Zibby) came in to get me set up with a bag of fluids through the IV and the monitors for the contraction and baby’s heart rate. Not much later she started the Petocin, starting low and increasing slowly. It was pretty boring and slow going for a while and Chad and I regretted not bringing any cards. At one point I looked over and Chad was sitting there tapping his foot to the sound of Leah’s heartbeat. During this time we finalized the middle name and its spelling. My contractions started happening more frequently but they weren’t painful. At most they were a little uncomfortable, like the ones I’d already been having for the last month.

I think it was somewhere around 11:00 Dr Hechtman came in and broke my water. It wasn’t nearly as painful as I expected. Right after that we expected things to speed up so we went ahead and got the epidural in even though I still wasn’t in pain. An internal monitor (more accurate) was now in place for the contractions and Chad was telling me how big and long they were getting…I couldn’t feel a thing. Maybe some chills from time to time but that’s it. My legs were so numb and I couldn’t even move my right leg on my own. The epidural made me feel lazy. I couldn’t sleep, but I just laid there. I kind of wished I could feel SOMETHING.

After a little while we started noticing decelerations in Leah’s heartrate. Every time I had a contraction we would have a deceleration, sometimes down to about 70. This concerned Zibby but she didn’t panic. She said she wanted someone from the Nic U down to help for the delivery just in case. I don’t know what time it was (probably around 2:30) I started to feel the “pressure”. Actually it started to hurt a little, but only on me left side. I felt like she was prying on a bone. So Dr Hechtman came in and the pushing began. After I guess half an hour of “push push push!” and “harder harder harder!” Leah finaly came out. She was perfectly healthy, but came out sunnyside up to the surprise of the doctor. She had her cord wrapped around her neck which explained the blood pressure drops with the contractions. She was born at 3:14pm and was 7lbs, 12oz, 13 ¾ in head (ouch!) and 21” long. He has a head of hair, but it’s lighter than Autumn’s was. She had a little cone head from pushing up against my pelvic bone. That must have been the feeling on my left side. All the checks came out well and we’re both healthy. Recovery for me is going much better than it did with Autumn and we’re happy to be home!

Autumn as flower girl

Chads cousin, Leslie, got married this summer in Bellingham, WA where Autumn was the flower girl. It was nice seeing the area as it was absolutely beautiful there! It was also one of the most beautiful weddings I've ever attended. Autumn and I went to Great Falls, MT before the wedding and my Aunt Heather and I made her dress. Unfortunately, the dress didn't stay in great condition after 2 wears (another flower girl wore it after Autumn), but it was perfect for when we needed it! Here are some great pictures at the wedding that Leslie shared with me. I think at least the bottom two are professional...sorry I don't know the name of the photographer to give him/her credit!

Annual Walsh BBQ cook-off

Here are some pics from the annual BBQ cook-off at the the Waslsh's (Chads Aunt and Uncle) on Labor Day. Above is their team. They roasted a whole pig! Too bad I didn't get a picture. :(

Above: Our team, the Northwest's Best. Along with Chad, Autumn and I are TJ (Chads HS friend), his wife Jen, and kids Faith and Kobe.

Above: Papa Joe SmithAbove: Valerie and Stephanie

Below: The kids had fun too!

Above and below are our appetizers: Grilled baguette slices w/ olive oil, topped with cream cheese, smoked salmon, dill, and lemon.

For our main dish we had pulled pork sandwiches, but I didn't get any pics of those (we all know what they look like!). For desert (bellow) we baked brownies on the grill (yes, that's right!) and topped them with a homemade cream and sugared strawberries.

Another baby girl!

Well here's the update, we're going to have another baby girl! We have soooo many girls in my family that I shouldn't be surprised. :) We also moved to Liberty Lake a few months back. We love the new house and the community out here. Autumn and I walk to places a lot more, including hitting up the farmers market fairly often.

My camera is found but the memory card is locked (whatever that means). If anyone knows how I can fix this will you let me know?

A Morning Downtown

Autumn and I went downtown for a bit this morning and we were met by a surprise. I guess it was the lilac festival and we caught then end of the parade along with a few other things.

A lady gave Autumn a balloon that she had her eye on. How nice!

Unfortunately, here she's taking it off her wrist and away flew the balloon! She was very upset about it. She cried to her daddy about it first thing when we got home.
Ah, the radio flier slide. She tried to go down on her stomach. I told her to sit on her butt and the kids behind her got impatient waiting for her to turn around.

She LOVES chasing the seagulls! I had a hard time getting a good shot with her running and the birds flying altogether, but this one is still pretty good.

The clock tower downtown.

We had to take a ride on the 100 year old carousel. That thing is fast! That's the main reason we went downtown in the first place. It just worked out that it ended up being a nice day.

I have no idea what this lady was on about. I wasn't listening.

Haha. She was intimidated by the giant fountain.

We got to pet the police department's horse. He was huge!

Autumns favorite part of the parade. She loves drums!
